Title: What Storm Chasers Don't Tell You After a Hurricane (And What a Real Contractor Will)
By Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC | Scott, LA | Veteran-Owned | Roof Maxx 5-Star Dealer
The day after a major storm, the first knock on your door is probably not from a neighbor.
Storm chasers are a well-documented phenomenon in coastal states. They are roofing contractors, mostly from out of state, who track storm tracks and dispatch crews into affected areas within 24 to 48 hours of a weather event. They move fast, they sound authoritative, and they know exactly what to say to a homeowner standing in a yard with a tarp on their roof.
Some of them do competent work. Many of them do not. And almost none of them will be around six months later when problems start showing up.
This article is about what they do not tell you, and what a local contractor will.
What They Don't Tell You: You Can Wait
The first pressure tactic is urgency. They will tell you that if you do not sign today, the material prices go up, the crew leaves, or you will get bumped to the back of the line.
None of that is true in a way that protects you.
Your insurance claim does not expire in 24 hours. Your right to get a second estimate does not expire. Your ability to select the contractor you trust does not expire. Taking two or three days to call your insurance carrier, get an independent assessment, and choose a local contractor with a verifiable track record is not only allowed, it is the right move.
A contractor applying legitimate pressure to sign before you have spoken to your insurer is protecting their revenue, not your home.
What They Don't Tell You: Assignment of Benefits
One of the most common storm chaser tactics in Louisiana is the Assignment of Benefits agreement. This is a document where you sign over your insurance claim rights to the contractor. They then deal with your insurer directly, on their terms, with no further input from you.
On paper, this sounds convenient. In practice, it removes you from the process entirely. The contractor negotiates a scope of work with your insurer that may or may not reflect what your home actually needs. They can inflate the claim, use inferior materials, or perform work that is technically complete but not to standard. Once you have signed the AOB, you have very little legal standing to dispute the outcome.
Louisiana has made progress in regulating Assignment of Benefits agreements. Do not sign one without reading it carefully and ideally consulting your insurance agent first.
What They Don't Tell You: Louisiana Contractor Licensing Requirements
Any contractor performing roofing work in Louisiana for jobs over a certain dollar threshold is required to hold a valid Louisiana contractor's license. Out-of-state contractors frequently operate in Louisiana after storms without this license.
Before signing anything, ask for the contractor's Louisiana contractor's license number and verify it at the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors website. If they cannot provide one or get evasive, end the conversation.
What They Don't Tell You: FORTIFIED Re-Roofs
If your storm damage requires a full replacement, the moment of replacement is the optimal time to upgrade to a FORTIFIED roof.
FORTIFIED is a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety that requires specific installation techniques at the deck, edges, and penetrations. In Louisiana, a FORTIFIED roof can qualify you for substantial homeowner's insurance premium reductions. The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program also provides grants to offset the cost.
Storm chasers do not offer FORTIFIED re-roofs. They are not certified. They do not know the program exists, or they do not want to do the additional work required.
A local FORTIFIED certified contractor will tell you about this option because it matters for your long-term cost and protection. Acadiana Roof Restoration is IBHS FORTIFIED certified and LFHP approved. We do this work regularly.
What They Don't Tell You: A Forensic Roof Inspector Is Different From a Sales Rep
After a storm, you need someone who can document damage accurately for an insurance claim, not someone who is calculating how much they can bill.
A certified forensic roof inspector looks at damage patterns, differentiates between pre-existing wear and storm-caused damage, photographs systematically, and produces documentation that supports your claim as a policyholder. That documentation protects you if your insurer pushes back on scope.
Acadiana Roof Restoration holds NRCIA forensic roof inspector certification. We can inspect your roof for the purpose of supporting your insurance claim, and we can do that independently of any repair or replacement decision.
What to Do After a Storm: The Right Order of Operations
Step 1: Do not go on the roof. Wait until it is fully daylight and the weather has completely passed.
Step 2: Walk the perimeter and photograph everything before any repairs are made. Photograph from multiple angles. Include close-ups of damaged areas and wide shots that show context.
Step 3: Call your insurance carrier and open a claim before authorizing any work. Get a claim number. Ask what the claims process looks like and when an adjuster will contact you.
Step 4: Do not sign any contracts at your door.
Step 5: Contact a local contractor with verifiable credentials, a physical address in the area, and a history of work in Louisiana. Ask specifically whether they are FORTIFIED certified.
Step 6: Get at least two estimates from local contractors. Compare scope of work, materials, and warranty terms, not just price.
Step 7: If a full replacement is recommended, ask about the FORTIFIED program and LFHP grants before agreeing to a standard re-roof.
